As a direct descendant of the pioneering 17th-century New England leader Reverend John Lothropp (1584–1653), Preston Lathrop carries forward a deep-rooted commitment to personal freedom, self-reliance, and unyielding character.
Champion of Liberty & The New England Foundation
Born in Yorkshire, England, and educated at Cambridge, Lothropp became a prominent Congregationalist minister who advocated for the separation of church and state and religious freedom. Following his congregation’s discovery by king’s officers, he endured imprisonment in London while his wife, Hannah, passed away. Released on the condition that he leave England, Lothropp and his congregation sailed on the Griffin, arriving in Boston in 1634 to find “a church without a bishop… and a state without a king” before establishing Barnstable, Massachusetts, in 1639.

His personal 1605 Bishop’s Bible is permanently preserved on display in the historic Lothrop Room at the Sturgis Library in Barnstable, Massachusetts—housed within his original 1644 home. During his 1634 Atlantic crossing, hot candle wax burned holes through several pages. Lothropp meticulously patched the paper and reconstructed the missing scripture text entirely from memory, symbolizing the extraordinary resolve of the Lathrop lineage.
